HEX Protocol: A Techwear Line by J. Paul Roe

Hex Protocol Techwear fashion streetwear design cyberpunk

I’m excited to announce the soft launch of Hex Protocol, my techwear brand that is intended to be my creative outlet for the more visual aspects of my brain!

I’ll be the first to tell you that I have a lot of interests that compete for my attention. While I’ve aced a few ADHD tests (take that how you will) I just call it “being a polymath.”

I consider myself very fortunate to have varied passions — and the skillsets that came from pursuing them — because they’ve helped me pursue my authoring career. I love graphic and web design, so creating my own artwork, covers, ads, website, etc. isn’t something I do because I have to. I enjoy it.

I also enjoy designing apparel, which is something I’ve done many times in the past for clients, for my own events, and for fun. Because I’m crazy about the cyberpunk aesthetic, I’ve recently found myself getting more and more into techwear — a futuristic blend of technology-inspired designs and streetwear.

Basically, it’s sci-fi clothing. And since I decided a long time ago that when it was time to design merch for my books, I didn’t just want to plaster my book cover on a cotton tee and call it a day. I wanted fashion.

So, I’ve been working on my own designs, exploring the space, and shopping around for manufacturing.

Now, I have a bunch of my first designs on their way! These prototypes include shirts (men and women), hats, socks, and gaming mats. I’ll be evaluating these products soon, and will likely be displaying them at my upcoming events. Eventually, these products will make their way into The Shop on this very website.

But of course I’m going to test everything first. I want quality and comfort to come first, so I’ll be rigorously QC every product before they hit my catalogue or vendor booth.

What is Hex Protocol?

I had to come up with an interesting, techwear-ish name for the brand, of course. Thankfully, I’ve created an entire cyberpunk universe to draw ideas from!

I chose Hex Protocol because it carries multiple meanings within the Hope Megacity universe. It is a lifestyle brand and cybernetics company (secret lore: it’s the only wetgear manufacturer that works closely with Overwatch). Hex Protocol not only makes wetgear that’s optimized for hackers and psychers, but clothing and accessories for Hope citizens who want to display their affinity for cyber warfare.

The name itself comes from insider lingo among hackers and psychers. A ‘hex’ is another term for a ‘quick hack’ — a Neurocom-vectored cyberattack.

The product makes its first official appearance in The Game State, and later appears in Jack’s third book when she gets another round of upgrades.
