I’m J. Paul, and I’ve been making a living as a writer for nearly 20 years. In 2023, I decided to turn my attention toward indie publishing, and spent hundreds of hours researching the market, building my brand, and writing (of course).

In my first year as an indie author, I published two novels, won seven awards, and signed two media development contracts with producers who not only loved my work, but managed to find me among the thousands of indie authors fighting to be discovered.

🤔 Why Do some Authors Struggle While Others Make It Look easy? 🤔

That’s what I wanted to know back in 2015, back when I first tried pursuing an indie author career — and crashed and burned.

No one was finding my books, and when they did, the reviews were not always great. In fact, my first full-length novel at the time only got one review before I pulled it down years later. That review was one word: “Rubbish.”

After that, I turned all of my attention to my actual career: brand development. I stopped writing novels and went back to copywriting, graphic and web design, and market research for technology companies.

That career wasn’t my dream, but it also wasn’t a bad way to gain mission-critical experience. Not only was I writing thousands of words every day for my job, the time spent running businesses and consulting in the technology marketing space gave me tons of valuable insight into selling books.
