AI is Not a Bubble: AI Hype Is

These days, everyone seems to be talking about “the AI bubble” and how, very soon, it’s going to pop.

I’m guessing they’re confusing AI — the technology — with AI, the grift-worthy talking point.

Because AI isn’t going anywhere, I can assure you. Especially since it’s been around far longer than the media hype and public backlash. What is popping is people’s interest.

You see, it’s gotten to the point where the anti-AI argument is just kind of boring. Those staunchly against AI — especially the crazed types who are way too emotional about it — have worn out their talking points. We’ve mitigated or eliminated most of the arguments. And now, it’s becoming evident that most people just don’t care about this “controversy”.

So we look to the people who are still raging and the pieces start to fall into place. Creatives, sure, but have you noticed it’s the overpaid and entitled creatives — like those in Hollywood — who are raging the loudest?

It’s just as I predicted. The indies, people like me, who don’t have legions of employees or millions of dollars are figuring out how to use AI as a force multiplier. In the right hands, any tool can be a weapon for creativity. And when the AI weapon is unleashed, it rains metaphoric hot lead all over big studios, insular industries, and the elite who are scared they will no longer be able to command inflated prices for their “work”.

The so-called victims have created their own funeral fire on this one. The biggest studios, publishers, and developers have spent years using their power and influence as a shield. They produce trash…and yet they cash huge checks. Now that technology has brought us to a point where it’s not unthinkable that an indie creator who doesn’t answer to them and their ideological gatekeeping can use AI to produce a feature film in their second bedroom, the big players are terrified.

They’ll never admit it, but the reason they lash out so fervently against AI is not creative integrity — it’s because AI has finally made them look in the mirror and realize that we don’t need them. When a Hollywood writer sees that their work is worse than something ChatGPT chucked together, they should be afraid. Because that’s just more evidence that someone out there — a real talent — deserves their job more than they do.

They’re not safe because they’ve been in the industry for 30 years. They’re not safe because of their pedigree or their cliquish in-roads. When the playing field is level, they might not be untouchable any more.

So yes, the AI bubble will burst. Conversationally and economically. But it will still be around, and it falls upon us to use it wisely, ethically, and skillfully.
